I am so impressed that there is actually a debate between Sean Astin and Elijah Wood in the commentary of LOTR:TTT over whether the line “There’s some good in the world, Mister Frodo and it’s worth fighting for” is an explicit condoning of war or not. Astin tells a story where he went to write the line as part of an autograph for a kid and stopped at ‘worth’ for five minutes trying to work out whether to put a question mark after ‘fighting for’, and then the guys in the commentary have a discussion about whether ‘fighting’ can be held to be non-violent conflict and whether this can be read as an anti-war film or not. They get quite emotional about it. They explicitly discuss the relationship between the film and the real world situation of the war in Iraq at the time.

In fact, Astin regularly gets passionate and waxes eloquent about something. His vocabulary is quite extraordinary too. Very impressed with the man.
