What an absolutely awesome night to follow a great day. It started out with heading down to the International Women’s Day March, where I ran into my old friend Shabnam who I’d completely lost touch with. Shabnam is smart, sassy, sexy, political. In short, all the things I look for in a person. We caught up for a while, and then, with an invitation for drinks later, I headed down to an exhibition called Drugs: A social history at the Police and Justice Museum. That was interesting but small.
Then off to Erskineville for coffee with Bob Hughes, ex-2BL. Good chat, ranging from the role of the ABC in influencing how Al Qaeda is pronounced to relationships to organising candlelight vigils for the Spanish bomb victims to neuro-linguistic programming and giving media training to models.
Then off to Redfern for the promised drinks, where I meet Troy, Shabnam’s new sexy, sassy, political boyfriend. Yum. Great eyes. On the way to the Lord Robert in East Sydney we’re phoned by another old friend, Justine. Justine and I have a lot of water under the bridge: she was my best friend from 1984 till about 1995. She was pretty much my first love. We fell out. It got complicated. We’ve seen each other since then and got on like a house on fire (most notably in 1998 for the 10 year highschool reunion) but we don’t see each other often. It was fantastic to catch up.
Other people join us. We move to a party in a loft for some people who are moving to the UK. Shabnam already has a stated aim of picking up two women, Saskia and Patch and taking them home with her and Troy. I’m amazed to spot xammy in the crowd and head over to chat. After a bunch of texts, my friend Mark Pesce shows up with a friend of his from LA. On an adventure to find the loo, I run into astrodyke (a.k.a. Cinnamon) who now works at 2SER.
The music’s good, people are dancing, Shabnam and Saskia are having sex standing up, scaring poor Mark. It’s all good. Troy starts to kiss me. Mmm. Great lips too. Unfortunately, I’m losing my voice, and I have a wedding to go to next day. With regrets, I make my excuses and depart.
I am so glad I’m back in touch with Shabnam and Justine. Odd, but fabulous.
