Was thinking today about studying history in high school and wondering how they’ll teach this war, which primary sources they’ll use, what ’causes of the war’ will be accepted in Year 9 essays… and what they’ll call it. I started thinking “the first gulf war” and “the second gulf war” and then I thought, maybe this awful “war on terror” thing will win out. And then I suddenly realised: it’ll be called World War 3.
They’ll talk about how everyone expected World War 3 to be atomic and how it wasn’t. Think about it: what countries “fought in” World War 2? The “Allies” are almost the same. The enemy is still an Axis according to Shrub, this time an “Axis of Evil”. And the “theater” of the war (how I loathe that term) is global… North America, Indonesia, Spain, Iraq, Afghanistan.
Just so long as it doesn’t end up being called “the second hundred years’ war”.
