Thanks to all who helped with my research questions a while back. I just spoke to Tony Ayres, director of Walking on Water, and it is indeed a Hungarian ‘debrecener’ sausage that Anna is cooking on the barbie and it is indeed designed to demonstrate her cultural competency. However, my assumption that it was ‘innate’ cultural competency due to her background has to be rethought. I’d now argue it’s a “vernacular cosmopolitanism” as described by Bhabha… that because she has migrant experience, she has become cosmopolitan, unlike Simon who does not have this experience.
