I don’t give a damn about marriage. I do however give a damn about people’s right to love who they want and make families. I also care a lot about the role of media in affecting people’s attitudes, in promoting or reducing racism, homophobia and other prejudices. When the government attacks Playschool (yes, really) for having a real Australian girl talk about her real two mums because it promotes same-sex relationships, I am *furious*. How dare they! It’s vital that kids see that sometimes people fall in love with someone of the same gender. It’s not just for kids of those families to see “themselves” on TV, but also for kids of other families to see those families as okay, so they won’t traumatise kids of same-sex parents they encounter.
One of the ministers came up with some crap about him wanting to control when his children learn about same sex relationships as if saying “these are my two mums” is somehow instantly talking about sex and therefore information that you can be too young to hear! Idiots. Idiots. Idiots.
The stupid thing is that these people *know* the arguments because they use them with regards to ethnicity: it’s important to represent all ethnicities to prevent racism; that’s why Playschool has presenters like Deborah Mailman. Can’t they *see* that this is the new racism? Of course not. They’re Catholics [1].
[1] Sorry, silverblue, I don’t mean all Catholics think like this, I mean that they don’t see racism and homophobia as related because of their religion…
