Told frou_frou I’d send her links for birthday present buying that involved donations not gifts and then figured I may as well post them here instead.

TEAR is the one demiurgically_m used for my end-of-year gift this year. They’re Christian, but still pretty interesting. You can buy a family something as small as an organic kitchen garden or as big as a goat, a cow or supplies to help an orphaned family for a year.

Plan’s Tribute Gifts let you make donations on behalf of someone else. Plan is all about kids and is non-religious and non-political. You can make a general donation or donate to a project such as sanitation and water work in Vietnam or Migrant Women Workers in Indonesia.

The International Women’s Development Agency isn’t set up to take gift donations in quite the same way, but there’s a spot on the one-off online donation page to put someone’s e‑mail address to let them know you made a donation on their behalf. IWDA’s appeal this year is building safe space for women escaping across the Thai/Burma border from rape and sex slavery. In addition to shelters and care, IWDA is paying to train local women in survivor care so the community can become self-supporting.

By the way: Happy birthday, Mum. I’m buying some kids in India help with early childhood education on your behalf.
