I sometimes feel that I am participating in this community of digital culture intellectuals under false pretences, as if at any minute someone will discover I’m a fraud.
Tonight, I went to dinner with Mark Pesce, Alex Burns and Darren Sharp. As we were walking down the road, I spotted Toby Grime, who used to be the art director on internet.au yonks ago. He now works at Animal Logic. Stopped to chat to him, introduced him to Mark. He then spots Alessio Cavallaro from ACMI. Goes to say hi. And then Alessio sees me and Mark and it’s all “Where are you off to? How do you all know each other?” It was very odd: these guys are all key players in this industry. And while I’m involved in a cutting-edge project right now, I’m just the Web Producer. I didn’t come up with it… it’s not *my* art.
I feel that I’m still trading on currency from years ago when I was an innovator. I want to be that again…
Anyway, dinner conversation was unsurprisingly superb: from discussions about intelligence to Condoleezza Rice’s sexual predelictions based on her dommy shopping habits, to the new terrorist laws to the Internet 2010 report that Darren and Alex have been working on. I was less sparkly than I could have been thanks to a fabulous night out last night starting at artbroken’s housewarming, moving on to one_dreamy_girl’s birthday party and then on to the houewarming of one of the FTR cast, Daniel Kitchener. Thankfully, the others were pretty trashed from too much Absinthe last night themselves, so we were all at about the same pace.
