Once there were two friends, Najib and Mussa. They went every­where together and did many things together. One day, they were fish­ing and Najib fell into the river. He hit his head and almost drowned, but Mussa dove into the water and saved his friend. Najib pro­claimed Mussa a hero and instruc­ted his ser­vants to carve into a rock nearby “Here the won­der­ful Mussa saved the life of his friend Najib.”

Another day, they were walk­ing and they had an argu­ment. Mussa slapped Najib and Najib was hor­ri­fied. He grabbed a stick and wrote in the sand, “Here the trait­or­ous Mussa broke the heart of his friend Najib.” His ser­vant approached Najib and asked if he would like this carved into the rock too, but Najib declined, saying, “The secret to friend­ship is know­ing which things you should carve into the rock, and which things you should write in the sand…”
