Once there were two friends, Najib and Mussa. They went everywhere together and did many things together. One day, they were fishing and Najib fell into the river. He hit his head and almost drowned, but Mussa dove into the water and saved his friend. Najib proclaimed Mussa a hero and instructed his servants to carve into a rock nearby “Here the wonderful Mussa saved the life of his friend Najib.”
Another day, they were walking and they had an argument. Mussa slapped Najib and Najib was horrified. He grabbed a stick and wrote in the sand, “Here the traitorous Mussa broke the heart of his friend Najib.” His servant approached Najib and asked if he would like this carved into the rock too, but Najib declined, saying, “The secret to friendship is knowing which things you should carve into the rock, and which things you should write in the sand…”
